Gua Niah, known as Niah Caves is famous for the oldest human remains in South-East Asia, and one of the largest in the world, dating back some 40,000 years. Archeologists found fragments of pottery, stone tools, ornaments and wall painting of red-hematite, with the work of the unknown artist estimated to be 1,000 years old. There are millions of bats and swiftlets which made the dark recesses of Niah Caves their home. The cave is also known as a site where edible birds’ nests could be gathered too. Other activities at the Niah National Park includes fishing, rapids shooting and visitation to the cascades.
